Medical Tourism Kills Health - Kanu Nwankwo

Former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo says Nigeria is losing billions of naira in medical tourism, which is killing the country's health sector.

Kanu, who founded the Kanu Heart Foundation, said money lost to treatments sought abroad could be invested in the health sector to improve its present deplorable condition and restore confidence in health workers.

He made the comments in Abuja as the Foundation opened its Heal-a-Heart lottery for N5 billion to fund a cardiac centre.

"Life has taught me that acquiring properties or
materials things is important, but what should be ones priority is saving lives," said the former Eagles captain.

Some 450 patients have been flown abroad in the past for heart surgeries, costing millions of naira Kanu said all went into the coffers of other countries instead of Nigeria's economy.
