Winners and Losers from the Met Ball

The Met Ball offers the chance for fashion’s favourite folk to exhibit their finest frocks and show the world just how stylish they are – with varying degrees of success.

In 2012, ball attendees either struck gold with their gown, or experienced complete fashion failure. Here are the best and the worst of the night:

Winners

Pretty paisleys are one of the summer’s hottest crazes, and Jessica Biel worked the trend to full effect. Her fifties-inspired gown, with a flattering cinched-in waist and subtle shade, made the most of her glowing complexion and fantastic figure. By keeping her accessories neutral and her hairstyle relaxed, she managed to make picking the perfect outfit look easy.

Carey Mulligan outshone her man in a stunning sequinned Prada dress, with a voluminous knee length skirt that was the perfect mix of glamorous, fashion-forward and flirty. Avoiding a full length gown – whilst keeping some sparkle with metallic shades and over-sized sequins – was a savvy choice, creating the perfect age-appropriate look that was both relaxed and stylish.

Emma Stone looked amazing in her full-skirted red dress with its glittering additions and understated accessories. The 50’s style dress was right on trend, and her simple black courts pulled the whole look together, making an effortlessly original outfit that stood out from the crowd – even amongst the fashion elite.

Losers

Alexa Chung experimented with the latest leather look in Marc Jacobs, but her fabulously fitted dress failed because of the unnecessary addition of a white shirt underneath.

Beyoncé showed a little too much of that famous rear, sporting a feathered, lace, gothic gown with a sheer skirt – a full-on mix of some of this season’s biggest trends. Unfortunately for B, she took it all a step too far, ending up looking like a feathery mess whilst bearing her whole behind.

Coco Rocha failed to pull off the look of 2012 – a patterned suit in matching brights. Her badly fitting bolero with sequinned paisley print, awfully uncoordinated accessories, and messy dip-dyed hair made her look like she’d been in an explosion in a charity shop.

To avoid fashion disaster on your next big night out, just follow our top tips for outstanding occasion wear , inspired by the stars.

- Bold brights and pretty patterns are a simple way to make a statement. By keeping the cut classic and the accessories neutral you can look great without taking too many fashion risks.

- Retro looks always scream stylish, as long as you know which style is in this season. For 2012, think Mad Men and 20’s chic, inspired by Baz Lurman’s eagerly anticipated Great Gatsby.

- Short dresses are superb for a big occasion. Choosing one with plenty of embellishment will give you a glamorous look you can dance in, and will easily recycle for future events.

- Lace dresses are the look of the season. Whether you go for brooding black or a summery 60’s number, pair with your highest heels in contrasting colours for an original and eye-catching outfit.

- Metallics will give you a luxe look, without having to heap on the accessories.
